(Kuala Lumpur, 24 April 2008) : Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) today launched its Annual Charity Ride 2009 which has attracted 112 riders to take part in a 530km cycling event from Yan, Kedah to Krabi, Thailand.

Targeted to raise RM 80,000 from Malakoff’s business associates, the three-day ride from May 8 to May 10 will see the delegation of riders bringing cheer and the financial contribution raised from the event to six charity homes and orphanages located in Kedah and Perlis.

During the launch, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, Malakoff’s Managing Director and CEO said, “The Annual Charity Ride is part of Malakoff’s long-term and continuous commitment to being a responsible and active participant of the community. It forms an integral part of our flagship CSR initiative, the Malakoff Community Partnerships.”

“Sporting activities effectively dismantle the barriers between people, thereby overcoming differences in race, religion, gender and socio-economic status. Malakoff’s Annual Charity Ride aspires to bring people from all walks of life together and promotes a healthy competitive spirit amongst its participants. Importantly, participants enjoy a sense of achievement knowing that they are contributing to a worthy cause of reaching out to the less fortunate,” he added.

The Malakoff Annual Charity Ride was initiated in 2006 and has since served as a yearly rendezvous for those who take interest in covering challenging terrains spread throughout much of Peninsular Malaysia. Over the last three years, the ride has raised and distributed over RM 150,000 to 24 deserving schools, community centres and orphanages throughout the country.

This year’s ride is expected to attract professional cyclists from around the region as well as amateur participants who wish to take up the challenge for the very first time. The participants of the event come from all walks of life and train with each other in harmony, overcoming any differences they might have.

This year, over 30 companies contributed to the Charity Ride and amongst the key sponsors are Alstom Services, Rajah & Tan, Allianz Insurance, Algo Tech, Integrated Engineering Services, Malaysian Coal Integrated Engineering and Sterling Insurance Brokers.

“We are truly touched by the generosity of our business associates. The Malakoff Annual Charity Ride owns its success to them. We would like to thank each one of them for their willingness to extend themselves and look forward to their continued support,” concluded Ahmad Jauhari.
